yuy HAWK OR HOW HE PLAYS HIS SONG

Hawk or How He Plays His Song will explore the effect that leaving home has on one’s social, cultural, linguistic and spiritual identity. At the heart of the story, a Mi’kmaq youth is faced with choosing two very different life-styles, as represented by the choices of his parents.

The primary theme that this play explores is the role that “place” has in shaping our identity. How much does our environment determine our character? What role does community play in forming our identity? Does moving to a new place alter our character? Or do we carry our “home” with us wherever we go. In short, in the case of this play – will the main character necessarily be less Aboriginal because he moves away from his community? And, conversely, must he stay on the reserve to maintain his connection to tradition and spirituality?

Onelight Theatre held a workshop of Hawk in January of 2011, in collaboration with Manitoba Theatre Centre.
