Ever wonder what it would be like to view the world through the eyes of a young child? OneLight Theatre presented this view in our 2004 production entitled Josette. Based on Eugene Ionesco’s stories #1-4, Josette was a musical and psychological journey that explored a little girl’s ability to communicate while coming to terms with the absence of her mother. Josette’s father took her on a fantastic journey telling her absurd and colourful tales that added to the confusion of her unique upbringing.
Josette was created collaboratively - a style the company faithfully employs for each show. To develop the world as seen through Josette’s young and naïve eyes, the company created giant puppet like building blocks, and welcomed local turntablist Andrea MacNevin in a unique theatrical role. MacNevin's talents added a new and exciting element to the absurd and colourful material. With two turntables in a near ground position, MacNevin scratched her way in to composer Dawn Farrington’s revamped nursery rhymes.
“Ionesco’s stories have always been a working tool for me as a director and now I am thrilled to present the absurdist’s ideas in a work that has worn new territory, philosophically and musically for our company.”
-Artistic Director - Shahin Sayadi (2004)
