2008

This year will be great!

OneLight Theatre would like to wish all of our friends, colleagues and supporters a Happy New Year!

2007 has been a ground-breaking year for OneLight Theatre. The Veil had a very successful run in Halifax and Toronto and we thank Neptune Theatre, Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia, Harbourfront Centre, and all the artists, technicians and theatre staff who made the production possible. And, of course, we would like to thank everyone who came out (through sometime treacherous weather) to see the show.

We are pleased to announce that we are now considering several opportunities to tour The Veil within Canada and we are exploring the possibility of translating the show into Farsi for a production in Iran. We are all very excited that Khanoom’s journey will continue.

In 2008, OneLight will begin working on the Civilian Project during which will be developing and producing  2 new plays that focus on the impact of war on civilians. The purpose of this is to explore the variety of effects that conflict has on “common” people.

The plays will offer a variety of perspectives, east and west, mid-conflict and post-conflict, and direct and indirect experiences; together, the plays which comprise the Civilian Project, will enter a dialectic about the lived experiences of civilians.

Paranoia will be written by Montreal playwright, Greg MacArthur and OneLight will work with him to develop a play that will examine the experiences of Canadians living with the effects of post-9/11 threats and concerns. These people are, for the most part, distanced from the actual conflict, but they are affected, nonetheless by the pervasive threat of terrorism. Paranoia will debut in Halifax in Spring 2009.

Return Ticket: HFX-ABD-HFX will look to the past and document how people survived living in the shadow of war and will also explore the long-term effects of conflict on civilians. This play will be written by Shahin Sayadi and will bring to the stage a play that follows a man on his journey to return to his childhood home, a city changed forever by war. Return Ticket will debut in Halifax in Fall 2009.

We are looking forward to working with new friends and old to bring the Civilian Project to the stage.

In addition to these plays, OneLight Theatre will be working with Shauntay Grant to develop other theatrical projects through the Firestarter Mentoring project. And you never know, we may have a few more tricks up our sleeves!

Thank you to our Board, to our sponsors, to our colleagues and our audience members – 2007 has been a year to remember and with your continued support 2008 will be great!
